35mm Film Development Is Coming to Mooresville, NC

Kevin Sean Studios is expanding once again. We are currently testing and refining a new in-house film development, high-resolution film scanning, and photo printing service at our studio in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Our first phase is focused on 35mm C-41 color negative film development. We have already successfully processed approximately 15 rolls of film through our new system, including several customer rolls, and are continuing real-world testing before officially launching the service.

During this testing phase, we are offering free 35mm C-41 film development and digital scans for qualifying test rolls. This allows us to continue evaluating chemistry, temperature control, processing consistency, scanning, color reproduction, and our complete film development workflow.

Professional Film Processing, Done In-House in Mooresville

Film submitted to Kevin Sean Studios will be processed directly at our Mooresville, NC studio, rather than being shipped to an outside processing laboratory.

At the center of our new film development workflow is the FILMOMAT fully automatic film processing system, manufactured in Germany and designed specifically for precise and highly controlled film processing.

The FILMOMAT provides automated and adjustable control over critical development variables, including:

• Processing temperature

• Development time

• Agitation

• Chemical cycles

• Washing and rinsing

• Process sequencing

• Repeatable development programs

Its compact design allows us to operate a highly controlled film development workflow without relying on a large industrial processing line. This gives us the flexibility to carefully refine individual processes, monitor results, and make adjustments as we build a consistent workflow for each film type we plan to offer.

Phase One: C-41 Color Negative Film Development

Our current testing is focused on C-41 color negative film, beginning with 35mm film.

C-41 is the standard color negative process used by many popular films from Kodak, Fujifilm, Cinestill, Lomography, and other manufacturers.

Before making C-41 development a regular paid service, we are evaluating the entire process from start to finish, including:

• Chemical preparation and consistency

• Development temperature and timing

• Film handling

• Washing and final rinse

• Drying

• Negative inspection

• High-resolution digital scanning

• Color conversion and correction

• Final digital delivery

While our results have been very successful so far, we want the complete workflow thoroughly tested before accepting irreplaceable or professionally important film.

High-Resolution Film Scanning and Digital Files

Developing the film is only part of the process.

Kevin Sean Studios already specializes in professional scanning, digitization, restoration, and archival imaging, allowing us to incorporate film development into an established digital imaging workflow.

After development, negatives can be digitally scanned to create high-resolution image files suitable for viewing, sharing, archiving, editing, and printing.

Our long-term goal is to provide one local source for:

Film Development → High-Resolution Scanning → Digital Files → Photo Printing

For photographers and families throughout Mooresville and the Lake Norman area, this means being able to drop off film locally and work directly with the studio processing and scanning it.

Coming Next: Black & White and E-6 Slide Film Development

We are intentionally introducing each film process separately.

Once our C-41 development workflow has completed testing and meets our standards for repeatability and consistency, we will begin the next phase of testing.

Planned future film development services include:

Black & White Film Development

Traditional black and white film requires its own chemistry, development times, temperatures, agitation patterns, and workflow. We will conduct a separate testing phase before offering black and white processing as a regular service.

E-6 Color Positive and Slide Film

We also plan to begin testing E-6 color reversal film, commonly known as slide film or color positive film.

Unlike C-41 negatives, E-6 film produces a positive transparency directly on the film. Because E-6 processing requires very precise chemical stages and temperature control, it will receive its own dedicated testing and validation process.

Medium Format and Sheet Film

Our future development plans also include expanding beyond traditional 35mm film to support additional photographic formats, including:

• 120 medium-format film

• Black & white medium-format film

• Color medium-format film

• Sheet film

• Additional professional and specialty photographic formats as testing progresses

Each format and chemical process will be tested before being added to our regular service menu.

Why We Are Taking a Testing-First Approach

Film cannot simply be processed again if something goes wrong.

Every roll may contain photographs that exist nowhere else, which is why we are intentionally taking a conservative approach to launching this service.

Our goal is not simply to begin accepting film as quickly as possible. We want to establish a repeatable, documented, and carefully controlled film development workflow before customers trust us with important photographs.

Approximately 15 rolls have now been successfully developed through our C-41 system, but we are continuing to test before considering the process complete.

For that reason, during the current testing phase we ask customers not to submit irreplaceable family photographs, wedding photography, professional assignments, once-in-a-lifetime images, or film with significant sentimental or historical value.

Those rolls can come later, after our testing phase has officially concluded.

Instead of mailing film to an out-of-state laboratory, local customers will be able to bring their film directly to our Mooresville studio, speak with us about their project, and have development and scanning completed locally.

If you have a roll of 35mm C-41 color negative film sitting in a drawer, camera bag, closet, or old camera and you have always wondered what is on it, we are currently looking for additional film for our testing program.

For a limited time during this testing phase, we are offering free C-41 development and digital scans on qualifying 35mm test rolls.

Please remember that this is still an active testing period. We recommend submitting film that does not contain irreplaceable, highly sentimental, professional, or historically important photographs.
