IMPORTANT PROCESSING DEADLINE | STUDIO LOCAL TIME

All Film Received After 10:00 A.M. Starts the NEXT Business Day

This rule applies to BOTH standard three-business-day orders and same-day rush service. Orders must be received, documented and paid by 10:00 a.m. to enter that day's processing schedule.

Same-day rush: add $25 per order, subject to advance confirmation and capacity. To qualify for guaranteed same-day completion, film and payment must be accepted by 10:00 a.m. Film received after the cutoff is not guaranteed that day; the earliest possible rush completion is the next business day, once confirmed.

Example: An order arriving Friday at 10:15 a.m. does not qualify for Friday same-day service. If next-business-day rush is accepted, completion may be as late as the end of Monday (assuming Monday is not a holiday). For standard service, Monday becomes business day one, Tuesday day two and Wednesday day three.

Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding observed holidays. Transit time, weekends, holidays, large orders, unusual film, and time awaiting payment do not count toward processing time.

BEHIND OUR BOUTIQUE PROCESS

Precision Filmomat Processing, Not Retail-Store Bulk Development

Our C-41 color film is developed in-house using a Filmomat automatic film-processing system. This is a compact, precisely controlled processor, not a high-volume industrial minilab or large retail-store processing line.

While the Filmomat automates the carefully defined processing sequence, our technicians prepare and mix professional chemistry by hand, calibrate process settings, monitor chemical condition, and verify processing temperature, timing, agitation, washing and drying. Every roll is logged, handled carefully and reviewed before delivery.

We do not send your film to another lab. Our small department is designed for consistent chemistry and individual attention rather than high-volume, one-size-fits-all production.

WHAT WE DEVELOP

C-41 Color Negative Film and Supported Formats

We process photographic color-negative film marked C-41, including many films from Kodak, Fujifilm, CineStill and Lomography. Popular examples include Kodak Gold 200, UltraMax 400, Portra 160/400/800, ColorPlus, Fujifilm 200/400 and compatible C-41 color-negative stocks.

35mm, Disposable Cameras & Medium Format

Our everyday film service includes conventional 35mm cartridges in 24- and 36-exposure lengths, eligible 35mm disposable cameras, and 120 or 220 color-negative roll film. These formats are suitable for casual photography, portraits, travel, and medium-format work.

4×5 and 5×7 Large-Format Sheet Film

We also accept compatible C-41 sheet film in light-tight holders or properly sealed film packaging, with minimum quantities shown in our pricing table. Contact us before submitting larger or uncommon formats so we can confirm handling requirements.

Not included in our current C-41 service: traditional black-and-white film, E-6 slide/reversal film, ECN-2 or remjet-backed motion-picture film, and unidentified chemistry processes. If you are unsure, send us the wording on the cartridge or box before mailing it.

CUSTOM PROCESSING OPTIONS

Push & Pull Film Development

Push or pull development changes processing time to accommodate a film roll intentionally exposed at a different exposure index (EI) from its box speed. This is a specialized request, not a universal repair for film shot incorrectly. It may change contrast, visible grain, shadow detail, highlight rendition and color balance, especially with C-41 film.

Processing adjustmentAdditional charge
35mm, 120 or 220 roll film+$5 per stop, per roll
4×5 and 5×7 sheet film+$2 per stop, per sheet ($5 minimum per order)

For example, a 35mm roll exposed at EI 800 instead of its ISO 400 box speed may be submitted for a requested +1 stop push, adding $5. A +2 stop push adds $10. Tell us the exact film stock, box ISO, camera EI and requested adjustment when placing your order. Adjustments require advance approval and may affect turnaround.

We normally process expired film at its standard C-41 setting unless a different approach is explicitly discussed and accepted. Push/pull processing cannot recreate detail that was never exposed or has deteriorated with age.

HONEST EXPECTATIONS FOR VINTAGE FILM

Old, Expired and Long-Stored Film: What to Expect

Finding an old roll of film can be exciting. It can also be unpredictable. Film's light-sensitive emulsion changes with time, and heat, humidity, previous light exposure, poor storage and the film's original exposure may significantly affect the final images. A roll can look physically normal yet develop with little or no usable photographic information.

Why Developed Photographs May Look Dark, Grainy or Discolored

Old or poorly exposed film may yield dark digital images, thin or overly dense negatives, color shifts, heavy grain, fogging, low contrast, mottled colors, spots, streaks or faded and incomplete scenes. Some frames may have only a shadowy outline; others can be completely blank. Even properly processed and scanned negatives cannot reveal details that were never recorded or have deteriorated.

What You See Is What Your Film Contains

Our JPEG scans and photo prints represent the images recorded on the developed negatives. The scanning workflow involves the necessary conversion of color negatives into viewable positive images and basic technical balancing, but standard service does not include detailed retouching, grain removal, artificial reconstruction or restoration. If your film is dark, discolored, soft, grainy or damaged, those characteristics may be visible in the delivered JPEG files and in your 4×6 prints. We will not replace the original appearance with an invented image.

If a photograph requires substantial restoration, ask about our separate photo-restoration services. Not every defect or missing detail can be corrected.

Blank, Unexposed and Unused Frames

A roll labeled 24 exposures does not necessarily contain 24 photographs. If you took only 15 pictures, we can scan and print only the frames that contain usable photographic images. Unused, fully blank or never-exposed frames are not scanned or printed. A roll with no recorded images may produce no digital photographs or prints.

Package prices are per roll, not per successful photograph. There is no discount or refund simply because a roll contains fewer photographs, is blank, or produces unusable exposures. The same chemistry, processing cycle, technician time and film-handling work are required regardless of image count. Problems attributable to a studio processing error are handled separately.

Before You Send Older Film

Please tell us if the film is expired, how old it may be, whether it was exposed years ago, or whether it may have been exposed to heat, water, humidity or accidental light. Keep all undeveloped film sealed and protected from light. Severely deteriorated or unidentified film may require an assessment before we can accept it.

YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently Asked Questions About Film Development

How much does it cost to develop a roll of 35mm film?

Standard C-41 development is $15 per roll. Development with JPEG digital scans is $25, and development with JPEG scans plus one 4×6 print per usable photographed frame is $35. All standard packages use a three-business-day schedule with the 10:00 a.m. intake cutoff.

How long does C-41 film development take?

Our standard turnaround is three business days after film is received, documented and paid by 10:00 a.m. Orders arriving after the cutoff start the following business day. Same-day service is available for a $25 per-order rush fee when confirmed and accepted by 10:00 a.m.

Do you develop expired film?

Yes, eligible C-41 film can be submitted for evaluation and processing, although old or expired film may produce very dark, grainy, discolored, faint or entirely blank photographs. Results cannot be guaranteed.

Will you scan and print every frame on the roll?

We scan and print photographed frames only. Blank, unused and unexposed frames are not included. Roll pricing does not change when fewer photographs are present because the full chemical development process is still required.

Do you return the original negatives?

Yes. Developed negatives are available for local pickup or return shipping. Mail-in return shipping is a flat $12 per order and is charged on your invoice.

Do you develop 120, 220 and large-format film?

We offer C-41 development for 120 and 220 medium-format film and compatible 4×5 and 5×7 sheet film, with format-specific rates and minimums. Contact us before submitting unusual, damaged or unidentified film.

Can I develop film locally if I live in Charlotte or Lake Norman?

Yes. Our Mooresville studio serves the Lake Norman area, including Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Troutman and Statesville, as well as greater Charlotte. Nationwide mail-in film development is also available.

Can I mail my C-41 film to your North Carolina studio?

Yes. We accept mail-in C-41 film from across the United States. Open our film development PDF packet, follow its packaging instructions, complete the order form and sign the agreement. We invoice verified film quantities after the package arrives; payment is required before processing. Return shipping is $12 per domestic order. You can also use our online Information Request form for questions before shipping.

EXPANDING OUR FILM LAB

Coming Soon: Black & White and E-6 Film Development

Traditional Black & White Film Processing

We plan to add traditional black-and-white negative development for compatible 35mm and medium-format film, with digital scanning options. Black-and-white film uses a separate chemical process and will be launched only after we have completed our testing and calibration.

E-6 Color Slide and Reversal Film

We also plan to offer E-6 processing for color-positive films such as Kodak Ektachrome, producing transparencies rather than conventional C-41 negatives. E-6 requires its own precisely controlled chemistry and development workflow.

These services are not available yet. Please do not send black-and-white or E-6 film until we announce that processing is open and publish the relevant pricing and turnaround information.
